Yale Project on Climate Change Update

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!  Thank you for your interest in the work of the Office of Strategic Initiatives and the Project on Climate Change here at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

A few recent highlights to ring in the new year :

The Yale Project on Climate Change has made great strides, including cutting-edge research on the public's understanding and responses to climate change, the convening of two workshops on climate science for broadcast meteorologists, publication of the online Yale Forum for Climate Change & the Media, and a major initiative with science museums across the country to help Americans understand the local causes, consequences, and solutions to this pressing issue. These and our other efforts have led to significant media attention, with stories and interviews on ABC News, NPR, Reuters, and the New York Times, among many others. Perhaps most importantly,  however, our research on public attitudes and behaviors is informing the decisions made by the administration, Congress, federal and state agencies, advocacy organizations, and educators across the country. For example, I highly recommend this article just published by the prestigious Columbia Journalism Review: http://www.cjr.org/cover_story/hot_air.php?page=all.

It is an excellent analysis of the crucial role TV weather forecasters play in shaping public views of climate change.  It also draws upon our work in several places: our workshops for broadcast meteorologists, our Global Warming's Six Americas audience segmentation analysis, as well as the Yale Forum on Climate Change & the Media, our online publication and forum to foster dialogue among scientists, journalists, policymakers, and the public (http://www.yaleclimatemediaforum.org).

At the global scale, here is a link to a short essay I wrote on the eve of the Copenhagen Climate Summit on the current state of global public awareness of climate change, entitled "Ever Heard of Climate Change?"  http://astc.org/iglo/2009/12/have-you-ever-heard-of-climate-change/.

Beyond climate, we are continuing this Spring with our "Visions of a Sustainable World" Speaker Series at Yale.  On March 26th we will host Dr. Robert Costanza, co-founder of the field of ecological economics and Editor-in-Chief of the new journal "Solutions."  We welcome your attendance at this public lecture, which includes a complementary lunch by the Yale Sustainable Food Project.

2010 is shaping up to be a busy and exciting year.  Watch for our release of further survey results next month and thereafter.
